چکیده

In this paper we present a hybrid Physical and Medium Access Control protocol for a Wireless LAN which is designed to support both synchronous (voice) and asynchronous (data) traffic. The protocol is designed using a modified Bluetooth core and 802.11e radio access, where the voice service is supported by Bluetooth whereas data and video services are provided by 802.11e. The Bluetooth radio access is modified to operate using an orthogonal frequency hopping radio in bands of 20MHz coincident with 802.11e channels.

Supporting VoIP Services in IEEE 802.11e WLANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is becoming popular thanks to its cost efficiency. However, it has been a challenge to provide good quality of VoIP services in WLANs, which is due mainly to (i) the nature of contention-based channel access of WLAN Medium Access Control (MAC); (ii) the presence of coexisting non-real-time data traffic; and (iii) the ti...

Solutions to Performance Problems in VoIP over 802 . 11 Wireless LAN 1

VoIP over WLAN is poised to become an important Internet application. However, two major technical problems that stand in the way are 1) low VoIP capacity in WLAN; 2) unacceptable VoIP performance in the presence of coexisting traffic from other applications. With each VoIP stream typically requiring less than 10 Kbps, an 802.11b WLAN operated at 11 Mbps could in principle support more than 500...

Virtual PCF: Improving VoIP over WLAN performance with legacy clients

Voice over IP (VoIP) is one of the fastest growing applications on the Internet. Concurrently, 802.11 Wireless LANs (WLANs) have become ubiquitous in residential, enterprise, campus and public networks. Currently the majority of traffic on WLANs is data traffic but as more people use wireless networks as their primary access medium, a greater portion of traffic will be real-time traffic such as...

iVoIP: an intelligent bandwidth management scheme for VoIP in WLANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has been widely used by many mobile consumer devices in IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLAN) due to its low cost and convenience. However, delays of all VoIP flows dramatically increase when network capacity is approached. Additionally, unfair traffic distribution between downlink and uplink flows in WLANs impacts the perceived VoIP quality. This p...
